Free 50-point ecommerce resource

The ecommerce growth audit checklist.

Use these 50 practical checks to find the point where customer interest stops moving toward a paid order, then prioritise the smallest change with the clearest commercial value.

How to use this checklist

Mark each point as clear, needs evidence or needs work. Do not change everything at once: choose the highest-impact constraint, assign an owner and measure the result before scaling.

1. Strategy, offer and market fit

  1. Define the primary customer segment and the urgent problem the product solves.
  2. State one clear reason a buyer should choose this offer over close alternatives.
  3. Check that pricing, margin and fulfilment costs leave room for sustainable acquisition.
  4. Match the offer to the market, currency, language and buying expectations being targeted.
  5. Make the core promise specific enough to understand without exaggerated performance claims.
  6. Identify the strongest purchase objections before adding more traffic or creative volume.
  7. Confirm bundles, discounts and bonuses remain profitable after delivery and payment costs.
  8. Choose one primary conversion goal for each campaign and each important landing page.
  9. Document the customer journey from first discovery through repeat purchase and referral.
  10. Prioritise the commercial constraint that is currently blocking the largest amount of growth.

2. Ecommerce storefront and mobile experience

  1. Check that the mobile first screen explains the product, benefit and next action immediately.
  2. Keep navigation labels predictable so customers can reach categories and products quickly.
  3. Test search, filters and collection sorting with real catalogue terms and common misspellings.
  4. Remove layout shifts, overlapping controls and horizontal scrolling from priority mobile pages.
  5. Compress product media without making materials, colours or important details hard to judge.
  6. Keep tap targets large enough and spacing clear enough for confident one-handed mobile use.
  7. Show delivery, payment and return expectations before customers reach the checkout stage.
  8. Verify cart updates, discount fields and quantity controls work without confusing page reloads.
  9. Test the complete checkout journey on common devices, browsers and weak mobile connections.
  10. Make every error message explain what happened and the exact action needed to continue.

3. Product pages, trust and conversion

  1. Use a product title that customers recognise and that accurately describes the item being sold.
  2. Lead with customer-relevant benefits, then support them with accurate features and specifications.
  3. Show multiple product angles and enough visual detail to reduce uncertainty before purchase.
  4. Keep price, availability, variants and the primary add-to-cart action visible and consistent.
  5. Explain size, compatibility, materials or usage limits wherever a wrong choice could cause returns.
  6. Display only genuine reviews and never use invented ratings, testimonials or review markup.
  7. Place delivery estimates, payment methods, returns and warranty information near the decision.
  8. Answer the most common pre-purchase questions in concise, product-specific frequently asked questions.
  9. Use trust signals that can be verified, including real contact details and secure payment indicators.
  10. Track product-page exits, add-to-cart rate and checkout completion before redesigning the page.

4. Acquisition, creative and search visibility

  1. Map each important search intent to one useful page instead of repeating keywords everywhere.
  2. Give indexable pages unique titles, descriptions, headings and self-referencing canonical URLs.
  3. Keep the sitemap current and prevent private, duplicate and low-value routes from being indexed.
  4. Connect informational resources to relevant service, collection or product pages with useful links.
  5. Build advertising audiences around the funnel stage rather than mixing cold and warm intent blindly.
  6. Test creative hooks, offers and formats as separate variables so each result produces a clear lesson.
  7. Match the promise in every advertisement to the landing page customers see after the click.
  8. Use campaign naming and tracking parameters consistently enough to compare channels and creatives.
  9. Earn mentions through useful research, partnerships, client proof and editorially relevant resources.
  10. Reject paid link farms, automated directory blasts and guest posts created only to manipulate rankings.

5. Measurement, retention and operations

  1. Verify analytics records product views, add-to-cart actions, checkout starts and completed purchases.
  2. Exclude internal visits, test orders and duplicate events before using reports for budget decisions.
  3. Compare revenue, contribution margin and customer acquisition cost instead of optimising clicks alone.
  4. Review search queries, landing pages and conversions together to identify commercially useful traffic.
  5. Create abandoned-cart and post-purchase communication that is helpful, permission-aware and measurable.
  6. Segment repeat customers by purchase behaviour before sending broad promotions to the full database.
  7. Track return reasons, support questions and failed deliveries as inputs for product-page improvement.
  8. Assign an owner, target date and success measure to every approved growth experiment.
  9. Keep a monthly record of technical health, rankings, quality backlinks and conversion performance.
  10. Scale only the changes that improve a meaningful business outcome without damaging customer trust.
